Wrap Up!

Two Kerrobert Minor Hockey teams win the league Championship. Western Prairie Thunder lost only 1 league game all year and put many impressive wins in the column and take the Hi-Way 14 championship. They also win the Provincial Northern Championship. The Atom Tigers win the Northern League Championship and won every league game by impressive scores.

We can be proud of all our teams as they all had successful seasons this year. All of our dedicated coaches and other volunteers made it a huge season of positives. Working tohether with Luseland and Dodsland Minor Hockey made it all the more rewarding as we are going to need all our communities to keep this great game in the future. Good luck Quenton Murphy who will move on from his Minor Hcokey carreer. We wish him success in the future.

Coaches for the year were:

Brad Murphy, Garry Anderson – Midget
Jesse MacKinnon – Bantam
Dave Morrell, Andy Kissick – Pee Wee
Dean Simpson, Curt Kissick – Atom
Brad Neumeier, Gerald Duhaime – Novice
Myron Beswitherick, Darryl Fruhstuk, Troy Snider – Initiation

Thunder Roar to the Championship!

Hi-Way 14 League Champions!
Over the Elrose Aces 4-0 in game 2 in Dodge! Elrose played a hell of a game with some amazing goaltending. Justin Fischer snuck one past him on the wrap around and changed the momentum. They never looked back!

Way to Go!

3 in a Row!

A new record! The battle fatigue is catching up to the Thunder and showing through at a critical time. In a hard fought battle of the first and second place teams last night, the second place team did enough to disrupt the Thunder in their efforts to score. The 3-2 score in favour of the Elrose Aces continued to the end of the game. The Thunder dominated the play, but poorly timed penalties again negated some opportunities. A couple of 5 on 3s took its toll on tired legs. Elrose Aces quick shifts and fresh legs kept on coming. Coach Murphy told the kids “You’re only as good as your last game, and that game has yet to be played”.

The Thunder have one last chance to make it all go away, to end the drought and show that they are the team that finished first over all!

Friday night in Dodsland, the Thunder will entertain the Aces for game 2 for the League final at 7:30 PM.
$500.00 Shoot for Dough and $1000.00 50/50 sponsored by Holland’s Oiling, Precision Intrumentation, J&B Equipment and Greschner Oilfield are sponsoring the game. See you there!

Thunder Storm is Over (for now)

In what started as a hell of a storm, ended up in a shower. The KDL Prairie Thunder went down to the mighty Davidson Huskie’s high powered offence in the Provincial C Final game by a score of 8-3 on Sunday night to lose 2 games in a row for the first time all season. The Huskies have been averaging over 10 goals a game, all season and in the end, they proved too much for the Thunder.

What a run though! It has been a long road to the final round for an unlikely squad with only a pair of 3rd year veterans. With mostly rookies and 2nd years, these guys took the league and the province by storm! Way to go guys!

The season’s not over yet! The Thunder will focus on meeting second place Elrose Aces in the Hi-Way 14 league final series for the Championship. Starting Tuesday in Elrose for game one, the Aces return to Dodsland on Friday night for the final game at 7:30. Come cheer the team on to the cup in Dodsland!

Thunder Lose Game One in the Third

Connor Phillips from Stephen Schraefel put the Thunder up early in the first. The boys came hard and had Davidson on their heals with some good chances for the better part of the first period. The second was even up and they traded chances. In the third the Thunder seemed to run out of legs and Davidson kept coming to score 3 unanswered goals to win the game 3-1. We have learned not to write this team off as they seem to like adversity. They will travel back to Davidson on Sunday to redeem themselves in the game 2.

If you would like to ride the fan bus to Davidson please contact Jason Neufeld or Randy Neumeier for the bus out of Dodsland.

Congratulations to Keili Murphy and Rachel Mitchell for winning the Provincial Championship with Dodsland Pee Wee Girls A

The Thunder found themselves in a 2-0 hole against Wilkie in game 2 of league semi final play when the Anderson, Phillips, Morris line decided to put on a clinic. They teamed up on every point on the board. Anderson with the hat trick and an assist, Phillips with a goal and 2 assists and Morris with an assist, gave the Thunder the 4-3 win to advance to the final round.

Pee Wees will play the League Final game at home against Wilkie on Wed Mar 25 at 6:30 PM. See you there!

Pee Wees Win game 2 against Unity 9-5
They advance to the league final against Wilkie!

Midgets Lose game one in Arborfield
Ty Neufeld opened the scoring for the Thunder one minute into the game. Arborfield quickly tied it up. Todd Chotowetz put them ahead a minute later and Stephen Schraefel made it 3-1 six minutes in. That would be the end of the Thunder scoring machine and the score remained the same through out the second. Line juggling and shortening the defensive bench was not enough to get them rolling and stop the onslot and Aborfield would score 4 unanswered goals in the third to win 5-3. They will return Saturday for game 2.

Shocker in Dodge!

Prairie Thunder Midgets invited the Wilkie Outlaws into the Dodsland barn for game 1 of the Provincial Northern Semi Final.   A $600.00  50/50, a wing night to follow and a game that didn’t quit.
Wilkie came out hard in the first period and had the Thunder on their heels when they opened the scoring 2 minutes into the game and held the lead until halfway through the first. Thunder Captain Quenton Murphy took the reins and his pumped up band of mighty men never looked back. Murphy opened with a goal at 9:35 and led the scoring with 2 goals and 3 assists. Lane Neumeier had 2 goals and 2 assists, Connor Phillips 2 goals and an assist, Todd Chotowetz with a goal and 2 assists, Justin Fischer with 1 and 1, Braden Olson and Stephen Schraefel added an assist each to complete the 8-2 route. A fast physical game was the order of the night.

Thank you to all the fans who packed the rink and cheered the Thunder on to victory.
Thank you to G-Macs for guaranteeing the 50/50 prize and Precision Instrumentation for sponsoring “Wing Night”.
The Midgets will journey to Wilkie for game 2 on Monday night at 8:00 PM. See you there!

Midgets move into League Round 2

Thunder bus tried to venture to Battleford in the dense fog but she refused to go, she quit and came home. So the kids piled into a few reamining vehicles and got there just in time to start the game. In what could only be described as a very ugly game, the Thunder played keep away to avoid most of the kamikaze body checks attepted by Battleford. KDL pulled out a 6-5 win to move on the the second round of league playoffs against Wilkie.

Pee Wees move to Round 2

Pee Wees defeated Kindersley in game in the 2 game total point series to move into round 2 of league playoffs.

Atoms traveled to Saskatoon for a 24 team tournament on the weekend and fun was had by kids and parents alike. The kids went undeafeated in round robin play but Sunday morning, still half asleep they let Sherwood Park have a 4-1 lead before battling back to tie the game. After a great effort they lost with 26 seconds left in overtime.

Bantams lost their playoff game against Biggar in Kerrobert Friday night.

Midgets Advance to Provincial Round 3

Beyond ThunderDome
The Midgets hosted the Battleford Blues in the opening round of League playoffs Thursday night. Braden Olsen opened the scoring for the Thunder from Jaden Thiessen and Andrew Morris in the first period. The score remained 1-0 until 13 minutes into the second when Cody McQueen broke the silence from Blair MacDonald and Adam Schraefel to make it 2-0 going into the third. Quenton Murphy made it 3 from Lane Neumeier and Ashton Tetzlaff and with only 38 seconds left, Todd Chotowetz from Murphy gave them a 4-0 cushion to take back to Battleford for the 2 game total point series on March 4. Cameron Olson backstopped the shutout for the Thunder.

Battle of the Bantam K’s
Kerrobert Bantams entertained Kindersley Wednesday night, engaging in a hard hitting, high tempo battle that saw the lead change throughout the game with great chances at both ends of the ice. In the dying minutes of the game Kerrobert netted the winner and then a short handed clincher to go up by 2 and take the game 7-5. Captain Dylan MacKinnon tucked 4 and had 2 assists, Logan Dommett scored once with 4 assists, Mason Anderson scored twice, Jake Semilet had 2 assists and Lane Ostrowski had an assist, all to the delight of the cheering crowd on hand for the playoff game. The Bantams will host Biggar on Friday night at 5:00 PM before the Sr. Tiger game and will hope to advance once again. Come out and support our Bantam Tigers.

Provincials
KDL Midgets made it through a very tight second round. After edging St. Walburg / Paradise Hill in game 1 by a score of 4-3 at home, the Prairie Thunder travelled to Paradise Hill for game 2 on Saturday in the Thunder Bus. After getting down by a goal, Michael Cholin opened the scoring for the Thunder with a high shot from the point. After a fast first period the Thunder were up 3-2, then 4-2 after  a very physical 2nd, and finished up 6-3 to win the series by a 10-6 total point. 3 points by Quenton Murphy and Stephen Schraefel with a goal and 2 assists each, 2 points from Todd Chotowetz, Riley Anderson and Lane Neumeier and single points from AshtonTetzlaff, Ty Neufeld and Braden Olsen rounded out the scoring for KDL. Cameron Olsen stood tall in the net for game 2 and Dylan Honecher kept the goals against at bay in game one.

About the attached video:
Don Lucia is the head coach of the U of M in the U.S. His background as heexplains is much like all of ours and he speaks very well as to the valuesthat I strive for as a coach and parent. I once was the screaming coach withthe novice players and have grown through exactly what he talks about. I’vewatched this clip at least a dozen times to reassure my values and coachingphilosophy when I get annoyed with the atmophere around the game, andmyself, as I watch and coach my own kids. As coaches and parents we shouldmake hockey as fun as possible for everyone sourounding the game, includingthe officials! Take ten minutes and watch this, save it and watch it againwhen you need to, it puts alot about hockey, and the progression from startto finish, into perspective, and to the way the game should be presented tokids and more importantly to the PARENTS!  On average most kids only play

hockey for ten years, 70% of that time should be 100% fun, the last 30% is a

reality check for what life is to bring outside the highschool, the house,

and the rink!

Remember to cheer for the whole team,
we all wear the same jersey!

Congatulating the other team doesn’t make you
a bad parent!   It is JUST a game!

How to Host a Great Game

With League and Provincial playoff games coming up, this is just a refresher on how to host a good game. It should be an enjoyable experience for the visiting town and the spectators.
Schedule your playoff games through Jessica (834-2344) for rink and booth. Contact Barb Stefanuik for officials. Contact Clem to put your game on the website.

Workers on the gate should start before the visiting team arrives (about 1.5 hours prior to ice time!)  Printed programs make the game much better for all.
50/50 collection should commence right away – Gate and 50/50 helps pay for referees and ice time and keeps fees low.
For games Pee Wee and up, it is advisable to have adult goal judges and workers for the penalty boxes.  For all levels, avoid having children in the clock/penalty box area for insurance and safety reasons.  Remember that off-ice officials (scorekeepers, timekeepers, etc) are to remain neutral – no cheering!

Be sure visiting teams know where their dressing room is and have a key ready for them.
Manager or game timekeeper to set up game sheet and deliver to teams to fill out.
Game time keeper usually announces the game. Find out prior to the game how to pronounce the names of the visiting team.
Make sure clock and PA system are working and ready before the game.
Music is an amazing addition to the game during warm ups and play stoppages. Announcing is done during game play.
For playoff games, especially provincial games, announce the players, have them line up on the blue lines to ‘Oh Canada”. Either have someone sing it or have it on a CD.

Provincial games: Your provincial coordinator will tell you who schedules refs/lines and whether goal judges might be required.

Thanks and good luck to you all down the stretch

If you think you are beaten, you are
If you think you dare not, you don’t
If you like to win, but think you can’t
It’s almost a cinch you won’t
If you think you’ll lose, you are lost
For out in this world we find
Success begins with a fellow’s will
It’s all in the state of mind

If you think you are outclassed, you are
You’ve got to think high to rise
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win a prize

Life’s battles don’t always go
To the stronger or faster man
But sooner or later the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can

Well, another hockey season is here
And I am writing to you for just one reason
Please don’t scream, curse or yell
Remember I am not in the NHL

I am only 8 years old
I can’t be bought, traded or sold
I’m not looking for hockey fame
I just want to have fun and play the game

Please don’t make me feel as if I committed a sin
Because sometimes my team didn’t win
I don’t want to be that great you see
I’d rather play and just be me

And so, in closing, here is one tip
Remember, the name of the game is . . . sportsmanship

The purpose of Minor Hockey is not about winning at all cost:  Minor Hockey associations are adopting a philosophy of Fair Play and Safety for all.

The five basic principles of Fair Play:

  1. RESPECT THE RULES.
  2. RESPECT THE OPPONENTS.
  3. RESPECT THE OFFICIALS AND THEIR DECISIONS.
  4. HAVE EVERYONE PARTICIPATE.
  5. MAINTAIN YOUR SELF CONTROL AT ALL TIMES.

Fair Play DOES NOT CHANGE ANY RULES OF THE GAME.
Fair Play ENCOURAGES ALL PLAYERS TO BE AS COMPETITIVE AS POSSIBLE BUT WITHIN THE RULES.

Fair Play is introduced to promote SAFETY and RESPECT, and a positive environment in minor hockey for participants involved. The four main participant groups are; the players, the coaches, the officials, and the parents (spectators). How these four groups interact at any game determines how positive, or how negative the event becomes.

There are an increasing number of concerns becoming more evident in minor hockey today. These concerns go against the principles of Fair Play, what minor hockey represents, and the objectives of recreational minor hockey organizations.

Some concerns in minor hockey are; the lack of respect for opponents, verbal abuse of officials, inappropriate spectator behavior in the stands, violence on the ice, the win-at-all-costs attitude, the increased pressure on young players to win, and the lack of FUN for many.

Kerrobert Bantams contributed some players this year to Unity and West central AA programs so we went recruiting. A goalie from Macklin joined the team and some kids from Eatonia traveled a long way to help and for these kids and their families we are very grateful.

Barb Stefaniuk is our Referee Coordinator. She will design the referee schedule for all home games. You can reach her at 834-2256. Team Managers will ensure the schedule is accurate and contact their game referees and confirm 2 days before the game.

We must support our referees. This is a tough job and like all of us, they learn as they go.

Many thanks to all of our referees!
