2008 ARCHIVE
Wrap Up!
Two Kerrobert Minor Hockey teams win the league Championship. Western Prairie Thunder lost only 1 league game all year and put many impressive wins in the column and take the Hi-Way 14 championship. They also win the Provincial Northern Championship. The Atom Tigers win the Northern League Championship and won every league game by impressive scores.
We can be proud of all our teams as they all had successful seasons this year. All of our dedicated coaches and other volunteers made it a huge season of positives. Working tohether with Luseland and Dodsland Minor Hockey made it all the more rewarding as we are going to need all our communities to keep this great game in the future. Good luck Quenton Murphy who will move on from his Minor Hcokey carreer. We wish him success in the future.
Coaches for the year were:
Brad Murphy, Garry Anderson – Midget
Jesse MacKinnon – Bantam
Dave Morrell, Andy Kissick – Pee Wee
Dean Simpson, Curt Kissick – Atom
Brad Neumeier, Gerald Duhaime – Novice
Myron Beswitherick, Darryl Fruhstuk, Troy Snider – Initiation
Thunder Roar to the Championship!
Hi-Way 14 League Champions!
Over the Elrose Aces 4-0 in game 2 in Dodge! Elrose played a hell of a game with some amazing goaltending. Justin Fischer snuck one past him on the wrap around and changed the momentum. They never looked back!
Way to Go!
3 in a Row!
A new record! The battle fatigue is catching up to the Thunder and showing through at a critical time. In a hard fought battle of the first and second place teams last night, the second place team did enough to disrupt the Thunder in their efforts to score. The 3-2 score in favour of the Elrose Aces continued to the end of the game. The Thunder dominated the play, but poorly timed penalties again negated some opportunities. A couple of 5 on 3s took its toll on tired legs. Elrose Aces quick shifts and fresh legs kept on coming. Coach Murphy told the kids “You’re only as good as your last game, and that game has yet to be played”.
The Thunder have one last chance to make it all go away, to end the drought and show that they are the team that finished first over all!
Friday night in Dodsland, the Thunder will entertain the Aces for game 2 for the League final at 7:30 PM.
$500.00 Shoot for Dough and $1000.00 50/50 sponsored by Holland’s Oiling, Precision Intrumentation, J&B Equipment and Greschner Oilfield are sponsoring the game. See you there!
Thunder Storm is Over (for now)
In what started as a hell of a storm, ended up in a shower. The KDL Prairie Thunder went down to the mighty Davidson Huskie’s high powered offence in the Provincial C Final game by a score of 8-3 on Sunday night to lose 2 games in a row for the first time all season. The Huskies have been averaging over 10 goals a game, all season and in the end, they proved too much for the Thunder.
What a run though! It has been a long road to the final round for an unlikely squad with only a pair of 3rd year veterans. With mostly rookies and 2nd years, these guys took the league and the province by storm! Way to go guys!
The season’s not over yet! The Thunder will focus on meeting second place Elrose Aces in the Hi-Way 14 league final series for the Championship. Starting Tuesday in Elrose for game one, the Aces return to Dodsland on Friday night for the final game at 7:30. Come cheer the team on to the cup in Dodsland!
***
Thunder Lose Game One in the Third
Connor Phillips from Stephen Schraefel put the Thunder up early in the first. The boys came hard and had Davidson on their heals with some good chances for the better part of the first period. The second was even up and they traded chances. In the third the Thunder seemed to run out of legs and Davidson kept coming to score 3 unanswered goals to win the game 3-1. We have learned not to write this team off as they seem to like adversity. They will travel back to Davidson on Sunday to redeem themselves in the game 2.
If you would like to ride the fan bus to Davidson please contact Jason Neufeld or Randy Neumeier for the bus out of Dodsland.
Congratulations to Keili Murphy and Rachel Mitchell for winning the Provincial Championship with Dodsland Pee Wee Girls A

Thunder @ Davidson
In front of a packed Kerrobert Arena, down 2 goals in the series, the Thunder got themselves down another goal early in game two. Five minutes into the second, spark plug, Connor Phillips from Travis Turnbull opened the scoring for the Thunder and tied the game at one. Ty Neufeld from Anderson and Phillips made it 2-1 to take into the third. Andrew Morris from Thiessen made it 3-1 to even up the series total. Justin Fischer from Phillips and Morris gave them the lead in the series and Morris put the icing on the cake with the last goal for the 2 goal series lead, and win the game
5-1. Way to go guys!

The Thunder found themselves in a 2-0 hole against Wilkie in game 2 of league semi final play when the Anderson, Phillips, Morris line decided to put on a clinic. They teamed up on every point on the board. Anderson with the hat trick and an assist, Phillips with a goal and 2 assists and Morris with an assist, gave the Thunder the 4-3 win to advance to the final round.
They advance to the league final against Wilkie!
Midget League
The Thunder travelled to Wilkie Thursday night for game 1 of league playoff semifinals in front of a packed house. Quenton Murphy scored a hat trick and added 2 assists, mostly with 2 or 3 opponents hanging on his back, led the Thunder to a 7-3 victory in a decisive win before coming back to the Kerrobert Arena for game 2 on Tuesday. Murphy’s right hand man, Lane Neumeier netted a goal and 3 assists, Riley Anderson had a goal and an assist, Dylan Kruesel with 2 assists, Todd Chorowetz and Justin Fischer each with a goal and Jaden Thiessen, Andrew Morris and Ashton Tetzlaff contributed assists for the win.
Wilkie returns here of Tuesday March 17 at 8:00 PM for game 2. Come and cheer on the Thunder.
Atoms Win League Championship!
Atoms win the league championship at home on Monday night in a convincing round with Macklin. The Atoms won every league game this year very handily and only lost 3 games all year against some elite teams. Way to go! A Huge Thank you to coaches Dean Simpson and Curt Kissick for looking after this aggressive, fast skating team all year. It is a tough job with a huge committement, and appreciated by all!
Midgets Advance to Northern Finals
Midgets lost game 2 of the Northern Semi Finals in Wilkie 5-4 on Monday night but still won the series by a good margin. Ty Neufeld scored 2 goals, Lane Neumeier with 2 , Todd Chotowetz had 2 assists and Quenton Murphy and Justin Fischer each with an assist. They now advance to Round 4 against Zenon Park/Arborfield for the Northern Final. Saturday March 14, they take a bus to Arborfield for game one and then return home the following Saturday March 21 for game 2 at 6:00 PM. See you there.
Pee Wees Take Game 1
Pee Wees defeated Untiy on Sunday 7- 4 with Mathew Stefaniuk in net for game one. Unity will return to Kerrobert on Sunday Mar 15 at 5:00 PM for game two. Come and cheer on the kids. The winner moves on to the league final.
Midgets move into League Round 2
hockey for ten years, 70% of that time should be 100% fun, the last 30% is a
reality check for what life is to bring outside the highschool, the house,
and the rink!
Remember to cheer for the whole team,
we all wear the same jersey!
Congatulating the other team doesn’t make you
a bad parent! It is JUST a game!

Workers on the gate should start before the visiting team arrives (about 1.5 hours prior to ice time!) Printed programs make the game much better for all.
50/50 collection should commence right away – Gate and 50/50 helps pay for referees and ice time and keeps fees low.
For games Pee Wee and up, it is advisable to have adult goal judges and workers for the penalty boxes. For all levels, avoid having children in the clock/penalty box area for insurance and safety reasons. Remember that off-ice officials (scorekeepers, timekeepers, etc) are to remain neutral – no cheering!
Be sure visiting teams know where their dressing room is and have a key ready for them.
Manager or game timekeeper to set up game sheet and deliver to teams to fill out.
Game time keeper usually announces the game. Find out prior to the game how to pronounce the names of the visiting team.
Make sure clock and PA system are working and ready before the game.
Music is an amazing addition to the game during warm ups and play stoppages. Announcing is done during game play.
For playoff games, especially provincial games, announce the players, have them line up on the blue lines to ‘Oh Canada”. Either have someone sing it or have it on a CD.
Provincial games: Your provincial coordinator will tell you who schedules refs/lines and whether goal judges might be required.
Thanks and good luck to you all down the stretch
If you think you are beaten, you are
If you think you dare not, you don’t
If you like to win, but think you can’t
It’s almost a cinch you won’t
If you think you’ll lose, you are lost
For out in this world we find
Success begins with a fellow’s will
It’s all in the state of mind
If you think you are outclassed, you are
You’ve got to think high to rise
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win a prize
Life’s battles don’t always go
To the stronger or faster man
But sooner or later the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can

Well, another hockey season is here
And I am writing to you for just one reason
Please don’t scream, curse or yell
Remember I am not in the NHL
I am only 8 years old
I can’t be bought, traded or sold
I’m not looking for hockey fame
I just want to have fun and play the game
Please don’t make me feel as if I committed a sin
Because sometimes my team didn’t win
I don’t want to be that great you see
I’d rather play and just be me
And so, in closing, here is one tip
Remember, the name of the game is . . . sportsmanship

The purpose of Minor Hockey is not about winning at all cost: Minor Hockey associations are adopting a philosophy of Fair Play and Safety for all.
The five basic principles of Fair Play:
- RESPECT THE RULES.
- RESPECT THE OPPONENTS.
- RESPECT THE OFFICIALS AND THEIR DECISIONS.
- HAVE EVERYONE PARTICIPATE.
- MAINTAIN YOUR SELF CONTROL AT ALL TIMES.
Fair Play DOES NOT CHANGE ANY RULES OF THE GAME.
Fair Play ENCOURAGES ALL PLAYERS TO BE AS COMPETITIVE AS POSSIBLE BUT WITHIN THE RULES.
Fair Play is introduced to promote SAFETY and RESPECT, and a positive environment in minor hockey for participants involved. The four main participant groups are; the players, the coaches, the officials, and the parents (spectators). How these four groups interact at any game determines how positive, or how negative the event becomes.
There are an increasing number of concerns becoming more evident in minor hockey today. These concerns go against the principles of Fair Play, what minor hockey represents, and the objectives of recreational minor hockey organizations.
Some concerns in minor hockey are; the lack of respect for opponents, verbal abuse of officials, inappropriate spectator behavior in the stands, violence on the ice, the win-at-all-costs attitude, the increased pressure on young players to win, and the lack of FUN for many.

Kerrobert Bantams contributed some players this year to Unity and West central AA programs so we went recruiting. A goalie from Macklin joined the team and some kids from Eatonia traveled a long way to help and for these kids and their families we are very grateful.

Barb Stefaniuk is our Referee Coordinator. She will design the referee schedule for all home games. You can reach her at 834-2256. Team Managers will ensure the schedule is accurate and contact their game referees and confirm 2 days before the game.
We must support our referees. This is a tough job and like all of us, they learn as they go.
Many thanks to all of our referees!
